While journeying Abraham and Sarah enter Abimelech’s kingdom. Fearful that the king desires Sarah for his harem and try to get rid of Abraham, the couple lies about their relationship. The border on the left asks, “wife? sister? wife? sister?” This points both to the ambiguous terminology used for relationships in ancient times, as well as moral equivocation present even among our first patriarch and matriarch.
