Embellishments

Although taggim, borders and illuminations are entirely optional, many stitchers report how much they really enjoyed creating these.

The catalogue shows how they add both beauty and meaning to individual panels and the whole installation. No worries if you don’t consider yourself an artist. You can do a simple border, or challenge and even surprise yourself.

This project is “folk art” at its finest!

CREATE A TEXT-SPECIFIC ILLUMINATION or WIDE BORDER

We hope that many of you will respond to the challenge of creating an embellishment. Don’t worry that you haven’t taken art since grade 7.  There are lots of resources available (see the topics above); and it’s the meaning that counts, not the draughtsmanship.
Please  observe these guidelines:
• Illuminations should not overpower the text panels; i.e. 7” high max.
• You can play with your design on TSBS graph paper: https://torahstitchbystitch.org/stitch/embellishments/graphing-your-ideas/
• The floss colours (https://torahstitchbystitch.org/stitch/embellishments/borders-alert/) and aida cloth (Zweigart 14-count warm white cotton #101 or #264) are not difficult to find.  A “fat quarter” from Needleworkers’ Delight (who has supplied our cloth from the beginning on huge bolts) costs $8.50 and will be more than enough for 2 illuminations.  Canadian stitchers can get materials from Gitta’s.
• If you have a specific narrative spot you want your work to be assembled, please state that reference on your consent form. 
• You may prefer to create a luscious wide border: minimum 5cm/2″, maximum 10cm/4″
